Ecological Relationships and Energy Flow Flashcards
How can changes in population be represented mathematically?
(birth rate + immigration) - (death rate + emigration)
Name three factors that are contributing to population growth.
🚝 Increase in food supply
🚝 Improvements in sanitation
🚝 Improvements in medical care
What is the greenhouse effect?
The greenhouse effect is where carbon dioxide and some other gasses trap heat from the sun’s rays within the atmosphere.
What is global warming?
It is believed that increases in carbon dioxide are increasing the greenhouse effect and this is causing the earth to heat up.
List four effects of global warming.
🚝 Climate change - more extreme weather
🚝 Polar ice caps melting
🚝 Increased flooding
🚝 More land becoming desert
Name three things that can be done to reduce global warming.
🚝 Plant more trees
🚝 Reduce deforestation
🚝 Burn fewer fossil fuels
What is a species?
A species is a group of organisms, with shared features, which can breed together to produce fertile offspring.
The name given to the amount of carbon we use.
Our carbon footprint
What are the causes of acid rain?
🚝 Burning fossil fuels releases sulphur dioxide
🚝 These combine with water in the atmosphere and fall as sulphurous acid - acid rain
What are the effects of acid rain?
🚝 Trees are killed by defoliation i.e. they lose their leaves and needles
🚝 Acid rain also kills trees by creating more acidic soil
🚝 Aluminium released from acidic soil into lakes kills fish
