Circulation Flashcards
What are the three main functions of the circulatory system?
1) To transport substances around the body, including oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients such as glucose, and urea.
2) To maintain body temperature since heat is transported with the blood.
3) To protect the body from damage by clotting and to produce white blood cells and antibodies which fight invading microbes.
What are the four main component parts of blood?
Red cells, white cells, platelets and plasma.
What are the two main types of white blood cells?
Phagocytes - engulf and digest bacteria
Lymphocytes - produce antibodies that clump bacteria together
What are the main symptoms of anaemia?
Extreme tiredness / fainting
Pale complexion
Rapid pulse rate
Blood is carried around the body in three main types of blood vessels. What are these?
Arteries - carry (usually oxygenated) blood away from the heart.
Veins - carry (usually deoxygenated) blood to the heart.
Capillaries - distribute oxygen and nutrients (such as glucose, minerals and amino acids) to the tissues.
Blood passes through the heart twice for every complete circuit of the body. This is known as …
Double Circulation
What is the function of the hepatic portal vein?
It transports blood and dissolved food from the intestine to the lived to be regulated.
Name two things that are used to measure fitness?
Heart rate
Recovery time
What is a stroke?
A stroke is a blockage in the blood vessels of the brain which causes the death of brain cells. It can cause paralysis and loss of speech.
What are the main risk factors for coronary heart disease?
Poor diet e.g. Too much saturated fat, cholesterol or salt Smoking Lack of exercise Obesity Stress High blood pressure Excess alcohol consumption
What is blood pressure?
Blood pressure is a measure of the amount of force of blood against the walls of the blood vessels.
