What causes Cystic Fibrosis?
🚝 Cystic Fibrosis is caused by a recessive allele.
🚝 In order to have the condition both parents must be carriers of the recessive allele.
Cystic Fibrosis is autosomal. What does this mean?
Autosomal means that it is not sex linked so males and females would be affected equally.
What are mutations caused by?
Mutations are often caused by errors in the copying of DNA before cell division. They can also be caused by some external agent such as UV light.
Give an example of a condition that is caused by a mutation.
Down’s Syndrome is caused by a mutation in the number of chromosomes present.
Explain what is meant by genetic engineering.
This is where a piece of DNA is taken from one organism and incorporated into another organism.
An example is making human insulin for the treatment of people with diabetes.
What are the advantages of using genetically engineered insulin over pig insulin?
🚝 Human insulin works best in humans.
🚝 There is a limited supply of pig insulin and the extraction process is slow.
🚝 Human insulin produced by this process can be made in large quantities.
🚝 No ethical concerns for vegetarian diabetics.
If a condition is inherited what does this mean?
This means that the condition is passed on in the genes from either the mum or the dad or both.
