Q

In the article Prevalence, Radiographic, and Demographic Features of Buccal Bone Expansion in Cats: A Cross-Sectional Study at a Referral Institution by Peralta et al, which of the following statements is false? (scroll down for answer)

a. Buccal bone expansion is characterized by gingiva that appears firm and bulbous on the buccal aspect of affected teeth with varying degrees of gingivitis, root exposure and increasing probing depth.
b. A width of more than 1 mm between the alveolar margin and the cementoenamel junction is considered abnormal.
c. Maxillary canine teeth were more commonly affected than mandibular canine teeth.
d. Buccal bone expansion was diagnosed radiographically in at least 1 canine tooth in 35% of evaluated patients.
e. The number of affected canine teeth varied in cats: 1 canine tooth was affected in 12 (35%) of 34 cats, 2 canine teeth were affected in 14 (41%) of 34 cats, 3 canine teeth were affected in 2 (6%) of 34 cats, and 4 canine teeth were affected in 6 (18%) of 34 cats.

A

C is false….primarily

In the 34 cats with BBE, there were a total of 70 affected canine teeth: 31 (44%) of 70 maxillary and 39 (56%) of 70 mandibular.
Note–in the discussion, it stated that the study showed that BBE is equally common in maxillary and mandibular teeth BUT if we just look at the statistics on this study, the percentage of mandibular teeth affected was higher than maxillary.

Q

Question: in Post-anesthetic cortical blindness in cats (Stiles, Vet J., 2012), which of the following is true

  1. 60% of cats also exhibited other neurologic deficits
  2. Cats anesthetized for greater than 2.45 hrs had increased risks of blindness
  3. The middle meningeal artery enters the skull via the foramen rotundum
  4. The maxillary artery may get compressed by the pterygoid and temporalis muscle during maximal jww opening
A

ANSWER:
4. con1promise. We were able to demonstrate during the cadaver dissections. that wide opening of the jaw caused marked tension on the temporalis and masseter muscles. It is likely that the pterygoid
muscles also develop marked rensio1) with wide Jaw opening, although due to the position of these muscles we were not able to confirm this during tl1e cadaver dissections. The close proximity of the maxillary rete to the pterygoid and temporalis muscles would make it potentially vulnerable to compressille or stretching
forces with marked tension of these muscles.

  1. is close, but the middle meningeal enters via the foramen ovale, the caudal most foramen
  2. the duration of anesth did not have an impact in this case series
  3. 85% of cats also had other neuro deficits.

Q

In the article, Radiographic evaluation of the types of tooth resorption in dogs by Peralta et al AJVR 2010 vol 71, which if the following statements is true?

a. External replacement resorption was present in 40% of dogs
b. The two most common types of tooth resorption present were external replacement and external surface resorption
c. Younger large breed dogs were more affected than older smaller breed dogs
d. Internal replacement was not detected within the study population.

A

D is true. Internal replacement resorption was not detected.

a. ERR 34.4%
b. Two most common were external replacement and external inflammatory
c. Older large breed dogs were more commonly affected
