Earth Science Sedimentary Rocks Classification Flashcards
-Rock that formed from mineral grains that fall out of solution by evaporation.
Crystalline
-Rock that formed from the fragments or pieces of other rocks and can be identified by size.
Clastic
-Rock that formed from the remains of plants and animals
Bioclastic
-Occurs as water between sediments dissolve and the remaining material hold the clasts together
Cementation
-A reduction in volume of sedimentary layers due to increasing weight of overlying sediments
Compaction
-A rock formed when dissolved minerals in water form a crystalline mass of ingrown mineral crystals after evaporating.
Chemical Action
What are the grain sizes
Clay
-0.002mm & smaller
Silt
-0.002mm-0.0625mm
Sand
-0.0625mm-2mm
Pebble
-2mm-64mm
Cobble
-64mm-256mm
Boulder
-256mm & up
Characteristics:
- Form at or near Earth’s surface where weathering can break down rocks into pieces
- Forms in horizontal layers
- May contain fossils
