Earth Science Rocks Flashcards
-To geologists, it is a natural substance composed of solid crystals of different minerals that have been fused together into a solid lump.
-The minerals may or may not have been formed at the same time.
-What matters is the natural processes glued them all together.
ROCKS
-A model that is used to show how the different rock types are interrelated and the process that create them.
ROCK CYCLE
-Processes that create uplift, weathering, erosion, pressure, and melting to form the different rock types are caused by the
Driving Forces
What are the 3 driving forces
- Earth’s interior
- Insolation from the sun
- Gravity.
-Formed from the cooling and solidification of magma or lava.
-The word “igneous” is derived from Latin “igneus”, which means “fiery” or “on fire”.
-Igneous rocks form at much higher temperatures.
IGNEOUS ROCKS
-A rock type that forms from an accumulation of sediment derived from preexisting rocks and or organic material.
SEDIMENTARY ROCKS
-Parent rocks that have been altered by increases in temperature and pressure
Parent Rock
-Preexisting rock from which metamorphic rocks are formed
METAMORPHIC ROCKS
