The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) is the
primary source for statistics on illicit drug use, alcohol use, substance use disorders in the United States
1906 Pure Food And Drugs Act
Regulated Pharmaceutical manufacturing and sales
Established limitations on what manufacturers could put in pharmaceutical and food products.
Requiring truth in labeling on products- nothing false or misleading
Created inspectors of the drug and food manufacturing process
Led to the creation of the FDA( Food and Drug Administration)
The 1914 Harrison “Narcotics Act”
- Regulated and taxed opioids and cocaine, and those who dispense it
- Required and that dispensers register annually and pay a fee
- use/ Possession was not criminalized by this law- rather, the drugs were regulated and taxed
Alchohol prohibition- Prohibition
-Prohibition was ratified in 1918 and implemented in 1919.
Prohibition- considered the “Noble Experiment”
-Played an important role in how the nation approached other substances associated with social problems.
Four Pharmacological Revolutions
- Vaccines- Got major communicable diseases under control
- Antiboiotics- to treat illness of the body
- Psychopharmacolgoy-developemnt of drugs for the treatment of mental illnesses
- Oral contraceptive-drugs gave control over the body
Four Principles of Psychoactive Drugs
Drugs are not good or bad
Every drug has multiple effects
Both amount and quality of the drug influence the effect
The effects of a drug also depends on the person
Drug Dynamics
Drugs work because they physically resemble chemicals produced naturally in the body
Drugs can alter mood or behavior acting on neurotransmitters in the brain

Drugs can be classified according to:
- Use (Medicinal or recreational)
- Effect on the body (the specific effect on the central nervous system)
- Source of the substances (synthetic or plant)
- Legal Statues(legal/illegal)
- Risk Statues( dangerous/safe)

- Over the counter
- Recreational
- Illicit
Illicit Drugs
Illicit drugs are those drugs that are illegal to posses, produce or sell
Factors putting young people at risk for s=using drugs:
- Genetics and family history
- Parental attitudes and behavior
- Substance use in highschool
- Positive expectations
- Mental health problems
- Sorority and fraternity membership
Reasons Why teens Report Using Drugs
- Peer Pressure/Other people
- Soical media
- Escape
- Boredom
- Rebellion
- Instant Gratification
- Lack of Confidence
- Misinformation
Routes of Administration of Drugs
- Oral ingestion
- Injection
- Intravenous
- Intramuscaular
- Subcutaneous
- Inhalation
- Injunction (rubbing it into the skin)
