Drugs list Block 11 Flashcards
Phenobarbital
Acts on GABA receptors, it is a barbiturate anticonvulsant and used for epilepsy but not absence seizures.
Teratogenic
Amphetamine
Stimulate noradrenaline release and dopamine release, acts on alpha and beta receptors.
Non-catecholamine sympathomimetic
Warfarin
Inhibits Vitamin K reductase reducing levels of reduced vitamin K needed for production of coagulation factors II, VII, IX and X
Crosses placenta and dangerous for foetus
Desogestrel
Synthetic progesterone
Binds to progesterone receptor and slows release of GNRH and LH to prevent ovulation
Folic acid
Converted to tetrahydrofolic acid needed for normal DNA production and erythropoiesis
Prevents spina bifida in pregnancy
Oxytocin
Receptors in uterus when activated they increase intracellular calcium and activate myosin to cause contraction.
GPC agonist to stimulate labour
Ethinylesteradiol
Act on oestrogen receptors to suppress FSH release
Dinoprostone
Prostaglandin receptor agonist
Used to ripen cervix when inducing labour
Sodium Valproate
GABA agonist used for epilepsy but not absence seizures
Teratogenic
Ethanol
Binds to ACH, GABA and NMDA receptors to cause sedation, also anti infective by dehydrating cells.
Neuronal depressant
Can be used for methanol poisoning
Cause foetal alcohol syndrome
Cocaine
Blocks Na channels to cause anaesethic effects and vasoconstrictor so just local.
Teratogenic
Lithium
Mood stabiliser by displacing other ions
Treats bipolar disorder
Thalidomide
Immune modulator of TNF alpha and also effects VEGF
Teratogenic
Used now for cancer and leprosy
Somatropin
Synthetic High that stimulates skeletal growth at epiphyseal plates at the end of growing bones.
Activates via JAK2 kinase pathway.
Used in dwarfism and growth failure
