these are designed to inhibit some aspects of usual physiological behaviour

nature, especially plants such as opiates (poppies), atropine (belladonna), digoxin (foxgloves)

penicillin, streptomycin

Types of drug action
main action, side action and toxic actions
main drug action (therapeutic effect)
the one that we want to use therapeutically or pharmacologically
side drug action (side effects)
these are undesirable effects in that particular application
toxic drug actions
these have an adverse effect on the subject and may lead to death
it can be a result of an overdose, or side actions or metabolic transformation
