Drug Effects and Interactions Flashcards
Study of the effects of chemicals on living tissue
pharmacology
chemicals that are introduced into body to elicit some physiological changed
medication/drug
who regulates development, safety and efficacy of drugs introduced to the public?
FDA
It is ideal for all drugs to have an
antidote (something that can reverse the effect)
Nursing Responsibility for Medication
Administering meds
Assessing medication side effects
Interventions to make meds more tolerable
Pt education about what and why theyre taking a med
Popular cardiac drug given to make heart more effective
Digoxin
Things you MUST do before administering Digoxin
Take BP, systolic must be >90
Apical pulse most be > 60 BPM
helpful, beneficial, expected outcome of a med
therapeutic effect
Undesirable, potentially dangerous outcome/ side effect
adveres effect
adverse effects best assessed by deterimingin pt’s
LOC
organ that metabolizes and breaks down medications
liver
organ that excretes meds from body via urine
kidney
Why are older adults at a greater risk for toxicity when on medications?
As you age, organ functions naturally decrease and will not removed meds as fast from body. 65 + ppl lose 3 % of kidney function each year
Aspirin (has blood thinner effect) cannot be given with anticoagulants (clots blood).. why?
It increases bleeding risk
