Albuterol
Sympthomimtic
SABA - Short Acting Beta Agonist
Bronchodilator used to treat conditions that cause bronchospasms.
Stimulates adrenergic receptors of sympathetic nervous system.
Albuterol Action
Stimulates Bata-2 adrenergic receptors in the lungs which leads to the relaxation of smooth muscles in the airway.
Causes the airways to dilate increasing airflow and reduces air from being trapped.
Albuterol Indications
Bronchospasms due to asthma, COPD or anaphylaxis.
Hyperkalemia (temporarily lowers K+ levels)
(triggers Na+ / K+ pump)
Albuterol Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, Hypokalemia, dysrhythmias, synergistic with other sympathomimetics
Use caution in PT with cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, seizure disorders, hyperthyroidism.
Albuterol Adverse/side effects
Tremors, Headaches, Palpitations, Dysrhythmias, nausea/ vomiting, chest discomfort, dry mouth
Albuterol doses
Adult dose: 2.5 - 5mg in Nebulizer
-Distress = 5mg
-hyperkalemia 5mg
-Inhaler 1-2 puffs
Peds Dose: 2.5 - 5mg in Nebulizer
-Hyperkalemia 5mg
-Inhaler 4-8/6 Puffs
