Aseptic viral, tuberculosis, bacteria
Fever and headache associated with a stiff and painful neck
Definition of meningitis
Meninges of brain and spinal cord become inflamed
What causes meningitis? (4)
Contamination of CSF by a virus, fungi, herpes simplex virus 2, and Ebstein-Barr virus
What causes tuberculosis meningitis?
Mycobacterium tuberculosis
What is Encephalitis?
What is it caused by?
Acute inflammatory disease of the parachyma tissue of the brain
direct viral invasion or hypersensitivity initiated by a virus
What are the risk factors of encephalitis?
Infectious herpes simplex
Viral infections: Measles, mumps, rubella/varicella, Epstein bar virus, hepatitis
parasites and drug reaction
Clinical manifestations of encephalitis
General headache nausea and vomiting followed by altered consciousness agitation
What are the risk factors of a brain abscess?(3)
Compromised immune system, cytotoxic chemotherapy, systemic illness such as HIV
