What are the dog breed groups
Gun, hound, pastoral, terroir, toy, utility and working
Gun dogs
Trained to retrieve, divided into 4 categories- retrievers, spaniels, hunt point retrieve, pointers and setters- good companion dogs that require a lot of exercise
Hound dogs
Originally used to hunt by scent or sight, require significant exercise
Pastoral dogs
Herding dogs that are associated with working cattle, sheep and reindeer- usually have weatherproof double coats like border collies
Terrier dogs
Bred and used for hunting vermin, bred to be brave and tough and to pursue foxes and badgers
Toy dogs
Small companion dogs, friendly personality and like attention, do not need a lot of exercise- can be finicky eaters
Utility dogs
Mainly of a non-sporting origin, they perform a specific function and not included in the sporting or working categories
Working dogs
Selectively bred to become guards and search and rescue dogs
Diet of dogs
Omnivores, almost 2 thirds of dogs are overweight
Feeding dogs
Eat large meals and then rest, fed once/twice daily
Routine veterinary care
Flea/ tick worming, like lungworm and vaccinations like parvovirus, distemper, parainfluenza

What are the 3 stages of whelping
- Start of contractions 2. Delivery of the puppy 3. Delivery of placenta
When do puppy eyes open
Around day 10, ears open at 14 days
Dystocia
Difficult birth, 16x more likely in brachycephalic breeds
