Biosecurity Flashcards
What is Biosecurity?
Procedures or measures designed to protect the population against harmful biological or biochemical substances
What causes Foot and Mouth disease
Contaminated feed, uncontrollable movement of animals
Nonsocomical infections
Infections acquired in a hospital setting
Cleaning
Physical removal of organic matter
Disinfection
eliminating/ reducing harmful microorganisms
Sterilisation
complete removal of all viable microorganisms from a surface
What effects the efficiency of disinfectants
Concentration, Contact time, cleanliness and susceptibility
What is a biofilm?
A slime layer attached to a surface made up of a community of microorganisms, functions like multi-celled organisms
How do biofilms form
Attachment of Microorganisms to a surface
Colonisation with formation of multi-celled layers
Exopolymer production- facilitates attachment by forming a matrix of columns which maximise nutrient delivery and waste removal
Dispersal- part of the biofilm then detaches and releases bacteria to start a new cycle of biofilm formation
Clinical waste
Any veterinary waste that could cause disease
Cytoxic waste
Toxic Medicinal products
Pharmaceutical waste
Waste contaminated with pharmaceuticals
Offensive waste
Non-hazardous but unpleasant waste
What are 3 reasons why biosecurity is important?
Maintains animal production, Maintains animal welfare, Maintains human health
What can occur without biosecurity?
Financial and commercial losses, Health implications for animals, and health implications for staff
How can you control human/animal movement?
Limit the number of visitors on the farm, isolate animals on arrival, use a cleaning/ disinfection protocol
How can you control contact with other farms?
Limit sharing of equipment, put fences up and limit contact with neighbouring animals
How can you control Wildlife/Pests?
Maintain fences, use pest control
How can you control contaminated feed/ water?
Remove the fallen stock, give access to clean water, store your feed properly
What is domestic waste?
Normal, household waste
How long should you keep a record of hazardous waste for?
at least 3 years
What is an example of a biofilm?
Plaque
What do biofilms do?
Protect the microorganisms from drying out, more difficult to remove, organisms are more resistant to an immune response
What are some factors that effect the efficiency of disinfection?
Concentration, Contact time, Cleanliness and susceptibility of the organisms
