What is Husbandry?
The practice of breeding and raising animals
Processes
A procedure or protocol (e.g. method used to disinfect calf pen)
Key performance indicators (KPIs)
An important type of performance measure to which we attach a value
(e.g. growth rate)
Target values
A value of attached to a KPI (e.g. calf mortality <5%)
Bench marking
Comparing the value of a farms KPIs to other external values for the KPI
Gold standard
The best current evidence based method used in a process or value attached to a KPI.
What are some reasons you may do an audit?
- Investigative
- Health planning and herd/flock health management
- Assurance schemes
What are the 3 main areas you look at when doing an audit?
Processes, Environment and outcomes
What is Measure, Manage, Monitor?
Measure the current practices (e.g audit) Risks and KPI’s, Manage (recommend action plans) How are these changes going to be implemented?
Monitor (what has been achieved?)
How and when will the outcomes and processes be re-measured
o How often will they be measured
o What will it cost to measure them
o Who will review the information and how often
What are some different processes you may look at related to fertility?
Oestrus detection method, semen storage, AI technique
What are some processes you may look at related to milk quality?
Milking protocol, Teat preparation, Milk machine cleaning
