DNA Viral Families Flashcards
What is the only ssDNA family?
Parvoviridae
What virus comes from the Papovaviridae family and what does it cause?
HPV and cervical cancer, causes warts
What diseases are caused from Poxviridae?
Smallpox and Monkeypox
What is the only disease that has been fully eradicated?
Smallpox
What is the structure of Poxviridae? (ds or ss, shape, etc.)
ds, complex, enveloped
What does Hepadnaviridae cause?
Hepatitis B
What is the structure of Herpesviridae? (ds or ss, shape, etc.)
ds, icosahedral, enveloped
What are the two most famous diseases from Herpesviridae?
HHV-1 (cold sores) and HHV-2 (genital herpes)
What does HHV-3 cause?
Chickenpox/Shingles
Why is Herpesviridae unique from other viruses?
It’s latent (can’t be cured, will lie dormant in nerve ganglia, and can be reactivated)
Where does HHV-2 lie dormant and how is it reactivated?
In the trigeminal nerve ganglia and travels down the nerve a few days before the cold sore appears. Lies dormant in sacral nerve ganglia for genital herpes.
Can be reactivated by stress, immunosuppression, hormonal changes, pregnancy, etc.
Which of the following is a family of viruses that has ds DNA, is enveloped, and causes latent infections?
A. Poxviridae
B. Orthomyxoviridae
C. Coronoviridae
D. Herpesviridae
E. Parvoviridae
D
What is the structure of Parvoviridae?
ssDNA, icosahedral, naked
What is the structure of Adenoviridae?
dsDNA, icosahedral, naked
What is the structure of Papovaviridae?
dsDNA, icosahedral, naked
What are the three species from the Papovaviridae family and what do they cause?
PA: papilloma = warts
PO: polyoma = tumors
VA: vacuolating = vacuoles in host cell
What is the structure of Poxviridae?
dsDNA, complex, enveloped, very large
What is the structure of Hepadnaviridae?
circular dsDNA, icosahedral, enveloped
also has an unusual replication cycle
What is the structure of Herpesviridae?
dsDNA, icosahedral, enveloped, very large and latent
What does Hepadnaviridae cause?
hepatitis B virus
What does Poxviridae cause?
smallpox and cowpox
What does Papovaviridae cause?
warts, tumors (mostly warts)
What does Adenoviridae cause?
respiratory diseases
What does Parvoviridae cause?
gastroenteritis, fetal death, fifth disease
