Q

Why is Herpesviridae unique from other viruses?

A

It’s latent (can’t be cured, will lie dormant in nerve ganglia, and can be reactivated)

Q

Where does HHV-2 lie dormant and how is it reactivated?

A

In the trigeminal nerve ganglia and travels down the nerve a few days before the cold sore appears. Lies dormant in sacral nerve ganglia for genital herpes.

Can be reactivated by stress, immunosuppression, hormonal changes, pregnancy, etc.

16
Q

What are the three species from the Papovaviridae family and what do they cause?

A

PA: papilloma = warts
PO: polyoma = tumors
VA: vacuolating = vacuoles in host cell

17
Q

What is the structure of Poxviridae?

A

dsDNA, complex, enveloped, very large

18
Q

What is the structure of Hepadnaviridae?

A

circular dsDNA, icosahedral, enveloped
also has an unusual replication cycle

19
Q

What is the structure of Herpesviridae?

A

dsDNA, icosahedral, enveloped, very large and latent

20
Q

What does Hepadnaviridae cause?

A

hepatitis B virus

21
Q

What does Poxviridae cause?

A

smallpox and cowpox

22
Q

What does Papovaviridae cause?

A

warts, tumors (mostly warts)

23
Q

What does Adenoviridae cause?

A

respiratory diseases

24
Q

What does Parvoviridae cause?

A

gastroenteritis, fetal death, fifth disease

25
Q

Which virus causes 85% of cold sores? How is it spread?

A

HHV-1
Spread via touch and contaminated items such as towels and eating utencils

26
Q

What does HHV-2 cause?

A

Genital herpes -> vesicular rashes

27
Q

How are herpes reactivated?

A
  1. Lies dormant in trigeminal or sacral ganglia
  2. Activated via stress, hormonal changes, etc.
  3. Virus travels down the nerve to the mouth or genitals
  4. Cold sores/herpes develops
28
Q

What does HHV-3 cause?

A

chickenpox and shingles
