DNA technology Flashcards
pedigree
a family tree that records and traces the occurrences of a trait in a family
sex linked gene
any gene that is located on a sex chromosome
chromatography
the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension or as a vapor (as in gas chromatography) through a medium in which the components move at different rates.
method for seperating things (polar vs non polar)
electrophoresis
the movement of charged particles in a fluid or gel under the influence of an electric field.
separate suspended molecules by their charge.
used to seperate dna
sex linkage
genes that occur on the sex chromosome are inherited differently in men and women
Microsort
separate sperm (X,Y) used to decide the gender of the bb
PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnoses)
screen embryos to see if they have genetic disease
IVF (in vitro fertilization)
- get eggs of woman with needle
- collect semen of dude
- mix in petri dish
- fertilized egg (screen them)
- implant in uterus
screen embryos or cant get pregnant or not naturally releasing eggs
multipotent
slightly specialized cell. has options but not a huge range of them
- bone marrow ( any type of blood cell such as white/red)
- umbilical chord
pluripotent
stem cell that can be any type of cell in the organism
found in a blastocyst (early development)
iPS (induced pluripotent stem cell)
when they induce a cell to become pluripotent (turn all genes on)
telomeres are short already
turning on cancer genes
PCR (polymerase chain reaction)
use restriction enzyme to cut DNA and then make copies of it with. DNA polymerase
DNA sequencing
determines the exact order of the bases in DNA (GAT or GAC)
used to try and identify different genes (functioning vs non functioning)
DNA fingerprinting
use restriction enzyme in electrophoresis to match DNA by different patterns from samples
