Chapter 9: Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is a heterotroph?
Needs complex amounts of nutrition from other sources to be happy
What is an autotroph?
A plant that is capable of Photosynthesizing Its own food
What is chemical energy?
energy to create a chemical reaction
What type of energy is used in cells and what is the ultimate source of this energy?
Unlimited source: sun
Type of energy: solar energy
What is photosynthesis?
when solar energy enters living systems in plants, and certain prokaryotes & makes organic compounds from carbon dioxide and water through the process of photosynthesis.
Benefits: creates oxygen for peeps who give back to the plant with carbon dioxide.
What is pigment?
Produces a characteristic color
What is an electron chain?
A series of molecules in the inner membrane of mitochondrion.
What is the storma?
The space inside the inner membrane
What are the three environmental factors that affect the rate of photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide levels, exposure to sunlight, and temperature
What is ATP
Adenosine Triphosphate, an organic molecule that oxides the main energy source for cell processes; composed of a nitrogen base sugar and three phosphate groups.
Makes stable w/ energy
