DLA 40 Flashcards
What are the components of the cardiovascular system?
The heart and blood vessels
What are the types of blood vessels?
- arteries - transport blood away from the heart
they have thick walls that can withstand the high pressure of blood from the heart - veins - transport blood to the heart
they have thin-walls with large irregular lumens - capillaries - connect arteries and veins
the level where nutrients are exchanged
what makes up the walls of blood vessels?
- tunica intima - inner epithelial lining
- tunica media - middle smooth muscle layer
(arteries have multiple layers of smooth muscle) - tunica externa - outer connective tissue layer
What makes up the walls of veins?
thin walls
tunica intima - inner endothelial linings, folded to form valves.
tunica media - limited layers of smooth muscle
tunica externa - thick CT layer
Most common circulatory route for blood?
heart
arteries
arterioles
capillary bed
venules
veins
heart
arteriovenous shunt?
directly from artery to vein
Anastomosis?
the union of two or more vessels
venous - alternative drainage of organs
arterial - alternative routes for blood to reach a tissue or organ
What makes up the lymphatic system?
lymphatic vessels
lymph nodes
lymphatic organs
How does lymph move?
interstitial fluid
lymphatic capillaries
lymph node
blood vessels
