ESSENCE
A
Diverticulosis refers to the presence of diverticula, without inflammation or infection. Diverticulosis may be referred to as diverticular disease when patients experience symptoms.

Risk factors

- Increased age
- Low fibre diet
- Obesity
- Use of NSAIDs

How is it usually diagnosed
A
- Incidentally on colonoscopy or CT scan

MANAGEMENT
General principles
A
- None if asymptomatic, but advice about fibre and weight loss
- Bulk forming laxatives (eg ispaghula husk), stimulant laxatives like senna should be avoided
- Surgery to remove affected area maybe required when no improvement
