Includes serosa + mucosal layers
What is a true diverticulum?
Includes all layers
What causes diverticulitis?
If the diverticula are blocked with bacteria, faeces, etc. it causes inflammation
What are risk factors for diverticula?
Age Obesity Low dietary fibre Smoking NSAIDs
How does diverticulosis present?
Usually incidental finding
How does diverticula disease present?
may present with lower abdominal pain (usually left-sided) - often incidental
How does diverticulitis present?
Abdominal pain (especially LIF) Pyrexia Neutrophilia Bloating Constipation Pain exacerbated by eating and diminished by defecation, flatus or PR bleeding
What are complications of diverticula?
Rupture/bleed
Fistula
Peritonitis
Stricture/Obstruction
