Increased diversity of routes in education by offering alternative forms of qualifications to choose from E.g. YTS / NVQs / GNVQs - Lead into a range of vocations.

Part of aim was to increase parentocracy / marketisation of schools:
Open Enrolment / League Tables - Enabled parents to make informed choices about where to send their children to school or college – Information provided on best performing schools etc

Broadening scope / choice of subjects studied with A levels and also split linear qualification into AS/A2 – Gave more choice to students e.g. Sociology, Psychology, Media Studies, PE

Increasing options regarding types of qualifications available. Provides a respected route into further and HE (Uni) or employment - Focuses on theory and would also cover Maths and English so held more esteem than previous NVQ / GNVQ under Conservatives.

Opened in areas “where they are needed” (gov.uk) offering more choice over where to go to school. State funded and set up by parents meant more parentocracy / flexibility over curriculum delivery etc

‘Outstanding’ schools (as graded by Ofsted) could now become Academies rather than failing schools. This offered more choice to parents about where to send their children. Partially state funded, partially sponsors - Meant more educational provision due to funding.
