Viral acute pharyngitis- Eti
85-95% of adult pharyngitis. Caused by EBV, adeno, CMV, entero
Viral acute pharyngitis- Sx
No fever, conjunctivitis, coryza, cough, hoarseness, ulcerative lesions
Viral acute pharyngitis- Tx
Supportive therapy- lozanges, pain relief, antipyretics, oral hydration. No corticosteroids
GAS- Eti
streptococcus bacteria
GAS- Sx
Classic findings= centor criteria- fever, absence of cough, exudate & tender anterior cervical nodes
GAS-Dx
Centor criteria or rapid strep test
GAS- Tx
Penicillin
Diphtheria- Eti
C, diphtheria- vaccination against- releases a toxin that can cause endocardia or neuro sx
Diphtheria- Sx
Tenacious grey membrane- fever, sore throat
Diphtheria- Dx
Presume diphtheria & begin tx- send to culture
Diphtheria- Tx
Horse serum antitoxin and penicillin
Mono- Eti
EBV- > 95% adults have infection. Common in 10-35 yo
Mono- Sx
prominent fatigue & malaise, posterior chain occipital adenopathy, splenohepatomegaly
Mono- Dx
Monospot test- may take 4 wks for +, atypical lymphocytes on CBC
Mono- Tx
supportive, avoid contact sports due to spleen
