Anthrax- epi
exposure to animals, hides or bioterroism. Aerobic spore forming rod
Anthrax- Sx
Cutaneous- erythmatous papules turn necrotic with black to purple eschar.
Inhalational- viral like symptoms, anterior chest pain- mediastinitis
GI- fever, abd pain, rebound tenderness
Anthrax Dx
Box car rods in chains, CXR- mediastinal widening, hemorrhagic lymphadenitis
Anthrax Tx
Ciprofloxacin or penicillin
Dengue Fever- Epi
Togavirus transmitted through mosquito in tropical climate
Dengue- Sx
Febrile illness, retroorbital pain, severe pain, macular rash & petechiae
Dengue- Dx
ELISA serologic testing, leukocytopnia, thrombocytopneia
Dengue- Tx
Supportive therapy
Cat scratch disease- Epi
B. henselae from cat scratch or bite. Disseminates in immunocompromised
CSD- Sx
Papule or ulcer at site of scratch. Regional lymphadeopathy!, fever & malaise
CSD- Dx
ELISA testing or symptoms of cat scratch + regional lymphadenopathy
CSD- Tx
Self limiting- if progresses azithro or doxycycline
Tularemia- Epi
F. Tularensis. Transmitted via arthropod bite or contact with infected animal flesh- rabbits
Tularemia- Sx
tender, erythematous papule turns black eschar with depressed center, regional enlargement
Tularemia- Dx
Serologic testing or presence of chancre form syndrome + exposure
Tularemia- Tx
Streptomycin or gentamycin
Toxoplasmosis- Epi
Toxoplama gondii- protozoa. From undercooked meat, cats, water
Toxoplas- Sx
Often asymtomatic- milde febrile illness, lymphadenopathy, fever & malaise
Toxoplas- Dx
PCR, Serology
Toxoplas- Tx
None if healthy individual, pyrimehamine + sulfadiazine in immunocomp.
Plague- Epi
Yersina pestis transmitted from rodents and flea bites
Plague- Sx
Buboes- inflammed, necrotizing lymphnodes, sudden onset of fever, malaise, tachycardia, HA & myalgias
Plague- Dx
Buboe smears or Ab titer
Plague- Tx
Streptomycin- isolate patient
Malaria- Epi
Plasmodium parasite transmitted in endemic areas by female mosquitos
Malaria- Sx
HA, fever, chest & abd pain, anemia, jaundice, splenomegaly
Malaria- Dx
Giema stained blood smear, dipstick test
Malaria- Tx
Antimalaials- prophylaxis and tx. Chloroquinine, etc.
