Disease Flashcards
What is Health?
Mental, Physical, Social and Emotional wellbeing
What is an infectious disease?
Disease that travels from host to host and is caused by pathogens
What is a non-infectious disease?
A disease that is not caused by a pathogen and is an abnormal bodily function
What is an endemic?
Disease in a small controlled area with a few people affected each year. E.g. Malaria
What is an epidemic?
Bigger than usual outbreak of a disease in a small area. E.g. Black Plague, Small pox
What is an outbreak?
Uncontrolled outbreak of a disease. E.g. Ebola
What is a pandemic?
Uncontrolled outbreak that crosses continental borders
What are the three lines of defence?
Physical Barriers, Non-Specific response and Specific response
What are examples of physical barriers?
Skin, Mucus, Cilia
What are examples of non-specific response?
Pus, Inflammation response, Phagocytes
What are examples of specific response?
Antibodies and acquired immunity
What is are the main types of pathogens?
Bacteria, Virus, Fungi, Macro Organism, Protozoa, Prions
What is a disease caused by a virus?
Influenza
What is a disease caused by bacteria?
Salmonella
What is a disease caused by protozoa?
Cryptosporidium, Giardia
What is a disease caused by fungi?
Ringworm
What is a disease caused by prions?
Mad Cow Disease
What are examples of infectious disease?
Malaria, AIDS, Influenza, Measles etc
What are examples of non-infectious disease?
Dementia, Depression, Cerebral Palsy, Leukaemia etc
What is are the four types of non-infectious disease?
Environmental, Lifestyle, Genetic, Malfunction
What is an examples of an environmental non-infectious disease?
Asthma, Cancers caused by asbestos
What are examples of a genetic non-infectious disease?
Depression, Dementia, Autism, some Cancer
What are examples of a lifestyle non-infectious disease?
Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes etc
What are the different types of immunity?
Passive, Active, Natural, Artificial
What is a disease?
An affliction of your health that is not caused by an injury
What is an examples of passive artificial immunity?
Injection or taking of antibodies
What is an example of passive natural immunity?
Immunisation passed through breast feeding
What is an examples of artificial active immunity?
Vaccinations
What is an example of active natural immunity?
Getting the infection
What are arguments for vaccination?
They protect you against diseases and stop the spread of disease
What are arguments against vaccinations?
One study showed a link between autism and immunisations. Natural immunity is better than artificial immunity
