Chapter 4- Materials Flashcards
What are the three types of bonding?
Ionic Bonding
Covalent Bonding
Metallic Bonding
What is ionic bonding?
It occurs between a metal and a non-metal and is where one atom is a “donor” and the other is a “receiver” and they give and take electrons. E.g Sodium Chloride
What us covalent bonding?
It occurs between two non-metals and electrons are shared e.g Sugar
What is Metallic bonding?
Occurs between metals and is where atoms are in a sea of de-localised electrons e.g. Zinc
What are properties of acids?
- Chemicals that produce H+ ions when dissolved and are corrosive and sour to taste
- Have a pH of less than 7
What are properties of alkalis?
- Chemicals that produce OH- ions when dissolved and are caustic with a bitter taste
- Have a pH or more than 7
What is the pH scale?
It measures how acidic or alkali something is
Acid is less than 7
Neutral is 7
Alkali is more than 7
What are indicators?
Substances that change colour depending on the pH. E.g. Universal Indicator
What is an alloy?
A metal that contains more than one element and have properties superior to both elements
What are some examples of alloys?
Brass - 65% Copper, 35% Zinc
Bronze- 88% Copper 12% Tin
What are the sub-atomic particles in atoms?
Protons, Electrons and Neutrons
