Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Equation for neutralisation reaction.
Acid + Base —–> Salt + Water
Equation for acid metal reaction
Acid + metal —–> salt + hydrogen
Equation for acid carbonate reaction
Acid + metal carbonate —–> salt + water + carbon dioxide
Corrosion of metal equation
Metal + oxygen ——-> metal oxide
Combustion of fuel equation
Fuel + oxygen ——> water + carbon dioxide
What affects reaction rates?
Temperature, surface area, agitation, catalysts and concentration
Equation for decomposition of a carbonate
Metal carbonate—–> Metal Oxide + Carbon Dioxide
How do you draw an atom?
Number of protons and neutrons in nucleus. Electrons in shells around: 2e, 8e, (8e, 2e) (for 1st 20). Need brackets with charge for ions
What are the major groups in the periodic table?
Group 1- Alkali Metals
Group 2- Alkaline Earth Metals
Group 17- Halogens
Group 18- Noble Gases
What are properties of alkali metals?
Very reactive
Form +1 ions
All solid metals
What are properties of alkaline earth metals?
Reactive but less reactive than 1
Form +2 ions
All solid metals
What are properties of halogens?
Become less reactive as you go down the group
Form 1- ions
Fluorine and chlorine are gases, bromine is liquid, iodine and astatine are gases.
All non-metals
What are properties of noble gases?
All very unreactive
All gases
All colourless and odourless
What are properties of transition metals?
Mostly form +2 ions
All metals
All have metallic properties
Kinda reactive
What does complete and incomplete combustion form?
Complete- carbon dioxide
Incomplete- carbon monoxide or carbon
