Sagital Plane
(Vertical Plane)
It divides the body into a left section and right section.
Coronal Plane
(Frontal Plane)
It divides the body into anterior and posterior portions.
Transverse Plane
(Horizontal Plane)
It divides the body into an upper (superior) section and a lower (inferior) section.
Anterior
Toward the front of the body.
Posterior
Toward the back of the body.
Inferior
Toward the bottom of the body.
Superior
Toward the top of the body.
Medial
Toward the midsagittal plane ; away from the side.
Lateral
Toward the side ; away from the midsagittal plane.
Distal
Away from trunk or point of attachment.
Proximal
Toward the trunk (limb or appendage).
Superficial
Toward the surface of a part ; away from the inside.
Deep
Toward the inside of a part ; away from the surface.
Ventral
Along (toward) the belly surface of the body.
Dorsal
Along (toward) the vertebral surface of the body.
