Brain Functions Flashcards
Cerebrum
The cerebral cortex Functions as a whole by interrelating component parts.
Frontal Lobe
- Consciousness
- Judgements
- Emotional Response
- Expressive Language
- Memory & Motor Skills
(the way we initiate a response in certain environments)
Parietal Lobe
- Visual Attention
- Touch Perception
- Voluntary Movements
- Manipulation of Objects
(the way we integrate different senses to allow us to understand a single concept)
Occipital Lobe
- Vision
Temporal Lobe
- Hearing Ability
- Memory Acquisition
- Visual Perceptions
- Categorization of Objects
Cerebellum
- Reflex Memory
- Coordination of Voluntary Movement (balance & equilibrium)
Brainstem
- Startle Response
- Autonomic Nervous System
- Levels of Alertness
- Ability to Sleep
- Vestibular Function
Midbrain
Cluster of dopamine producing cells called substantia nigra, which helps regulate movement.
Pons
Functions as an area for attention. (contains locus ceruleus)
Medulla Oblongata
Houses breathing control centers.
(Pre-Botzinger = regulates breathing rhythm)
Limbic System
Large group of brain structures responsible for :
- Motivation
- Emotion
- Learning
- Memory
Hypothalamus
Controls Pituitary Gland, which releases hormones that regulate various bodily functions.
Amygdala
Works with hippocampus to create long-term memories of specific, and often emotional events.
Thalamus
Relays information of our senses out to the rest of the brain.
(Recieves messages & Sends feedback)
Hippocampus
Responsible for long term memory and producing new neutrons.
