Action Potential Flashcards
Action Potential
Electrical signal that is carried down a neuron through its axon and passed to a neighboring neuron.
How is action potential generated?
Through a sudden reverse of charge.
What do proteins make up?
Channels & Pumps
What’s essential for nerve function?
The distribution of ions across the cell membrane.
What must happen in order for an ion to exit or enter the cell?
Ions must pass through a membrane or pump.
The six types of ions inside the cell that cannot leave?
- Phosphates
- Sulfates
- Organic Acids
- Proteins
- ATP
- RNA
Neurons can be stimulated by?
- Chemicals
- Light
- Heat
- Mechanical distortion of the membrane
Five steps of action potential?
1) Resting Potential
2) Depolarization
3) Action Potential
4) Repolarization
5) Hyperpolarization
How much energy from the body does it take to complete action potential?
- 70% of the energy requirementss of the nervous system.
- 1/3 of the body’s total energy.
Central Branch function?
transmits sensory signals toward the central nervous system.
Peripheral Branch function?
recieves information from sensory receptors.
Multipolar Neuron (axon & dendrites)
1 Axon – Many Dendrites
Bipolar Neuron (axon & dendrites)
1 Axon – 1 Dendrite
Unipolar Neuron (axon & dendrites)
1 Axon – 0 Dendrites
