DILI: Physiology of the Liver Flashcards
The liver metabolizes what?
Amino acids, carbs, lipids
What happens to amino acid metabolism in a damaged liver?
Increased ammonia and decreased muscle mass
What happens to lipid metabolism in a damaged liver?
Increased bilirubin levels in the blood because the hepatocytes are affected
What happens to carb metabolism in a damaged liver
Hypoglycemia
The liver synthesizes what?
Proteins (albumin, clotting factors, immune globulins, angiotensinogen), cholesterol, TGs, thrombopoietin (platelets)
What happens to protein synthesis in a damaged liver?
It decreases –> makes less clotting factors –> INR increases, decreased albumin concentrations, decreased thrombopoetin synthesis –> decreased platelets
What happens to cholesterol in a damaged liver?
Synthesis of cholesterol is altered –> cell integrity is compromised with liver injury
The liver detoxifies what?
food, drugs, herbals
What happens to detoxification in a damaged liver?
Reduced detoxification –> impaired drug metabolism
