Digestive System Flashcards
food processing involves ingestion (eating), digestion (breakdown), absorption (uptake of nutrient) and elimination (passage out of the body)
digestive system
site of ingestion (intake of the food), mechanical digestion (chewing of the food), and chemical digestion (due to saliva)
mouth/oral cavity
moves bolus (mechanically ingested food) from mouth to stomach
pipe connecting mouth to stomatch
esophagus
secretes an extraordinarily strong acid (ph=2) that leads to breakdown of food
digests proteins and adds gastric juice, producing CHYME
stomach
site of most enzymatic hydrolysis
after digestion is complete, chyme enters the small intestine where it is absorbed into the bloodstream
the chyme is propelled along by folded surfaces called VILLI, on the intestine
small intestine
produces alkaline solution to stabilize acidic chyme
secretes digestive enzymes, produces the hormone insulin that regulate blood sugar levek
neutralizes stomach acid
pancreas
creates bile which helps digest lipids/food
liver
pouch-like organ that stores bile for future use
gallbladder
reabsorbs water to solidfy feces
removes water from the chyme and gets waste ready for exrection
large intestine
