Diffusion of Gases Between Alveoli and Blood Flashcards
What does the pulmonary artery do?
It carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs and supplies the dense capillary network surrounding the alveoli.
What does the pulmonary vein do?
It carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.
What is the function of the pulmonary circulation?
It delivers CO2 to the lungs and picks up O2
What branch of systemic circulation delivers a nutritive blood supply to the lungs?
Bronchial circulation
What does the bronchial circulation deliver?
Oxygen, nutrients, enzymes and hormones to the lung tissue and also removing waste products from the lung tissue.
What percent of the heart output does the bronchial circulation?
Two percent of the left heart output.
Where do the bronchial veins drain to?
They drain to the left atrium via the pulmonary vein.
What do the veins in the pulmonary circulation do to the blood they carry?
They dilute the blood every so slightly.
What does the pulmonary circulation consists of?
It consists of L&R pulmonary arteries originating from the right ventricle.
What output does the pulmonary circulation carry?
They carry the entire cardiac output from the right ventricle of the heart
How is the systemic circulation linked to the pulmonary circulation?
They are linked in series.
How does the the blood that passes the pulmonary circulation in one minute vary from the blood that passes the body?
The volume of blood that passes the pulmonary circulation per minute is the same as the volume of blood that travels around the body in one minute.
What does the pulmonary circulation supply?
It supplies the dense capillary network around the alveoli and returns blood to the left atrium via the pulmonary vein.
What is the pressure and flow of the pulmonary system?
It is high flow but low pressure.
What is the pressure in the systemic circulation (bronchial circulation)?
120/80 mmHg
