Diffusion and Osmosis Flashcards
What is Diffusion?
Movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
What is osmosis
Diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of higher water concentration to an area of lower water concentration
What is a selectively permeable membrane
Only allows certain substances to pass
What is concentration gradient
Difference in concentration of a substance in 2 areas
What is turgor pressure
Outward pressure that is exerted on a plant cell wall contents when water is taken through osmosis
How does concentration gradient affect diffusion
It affects the direction the particles move in
How is osmosis important for keeping things alive
Cells need to maintain solute concentrations at a certain level to stay alive and healthy
What is diffusion’s role on how living things obtain energy and get rid of waste
The particles diffuse muscle waste (waste is mainly found in muscle cells) Oxygen diffuses from blood cells, once inside the oxygen cell, the oxygen is used to make energy
