What are the 7 nutrients?

What are the range of food groups?
Starchy foods- rice potatoes pasta Fruit and vegetables Meat fish and other sources of protein Milk and other dairy products Food and drinks with a high fat and sugar content
What is a dietary imbalance?
Having a radical change in his Diet and activity levels
Or if James continues his inactive lifestyle and consumes too many calories
What is anorexia nervosa?
Mental health disorder that is characterised by a potential life- threatening obsession to lose weight and this can affect james’ internal organs
What are carbohydrates?
Complex- They provide a slow release of energy and should be consumed prior to an activity (should make up 50% of his diet)
Simple- fast release of energy and can be consumed during activity
What are proteins?
Help to repair muscle and stimulate growth. They come from foods such as meat buts and eggs. (Should make up to 15% of his diet)
What are fats?
Slow release of energy when working at a lower intensity (below 60% of max heart rate). Come from cheese milk butter (should be 35% of diet)
What are fibres?
Come from indigestible plant material in breads and cereals. Improve cholesterol levels and digestive system. It is useful for weight loss and suppressing appetite, which may benefit James in losing weight
What do vitamins and minerals do?
Boost James’ immune system and help him to grow and function correctly.
Vitamin B and iron help to transport oxygen around the body
Calcium helps to strengthen bones.
They are found in fruits and vegetables.
What does water do?
Help prevent dehydration so James can maintain his performance when training, replacing the fluids lost through urination, perspiration and respiration
Water also helps to lubricate eyes and joints, and regulate body temperature
What is obesity?
Being extremely overweight
Excess levels of fat in the body result in a body mass index (BMI) of over 30.
What effect would obesity have on James’ sports performance?
It will have a negative effect, and may lead to joint problems and injury.
What health risks does obesity cause?
Diabetes
Heart disease/problems
What would a high protein diet do for James?
Helps to recover and repair quicker.
It would aid the recovery of james’ muscles from his extra training, allowing him to train more often
What does carbohydrates loading do?
Increase the glycogen stores in the muscles and liver. The glycogen will break down to form glucose and this will be the main energy source for the run
