Indications for dialysis:
metabolic acidosis
electrolyte abnormalities
Intoxication/drug overdose (aspirin, acetaminophen )
Uremia
Dialysis values (obvi has to go with clinical pic, but at which numbers do they consider it)
creatinine above 10
BUN >100
GFR <10 or less than 15 in diabetics
When it’s time to see a HD patient-then what are you looking for?
Don’t forget to check weights before and after dialysis! History and physical
New dyspnea or chest pain?
new or worsening headache, nausea, vomiting
Medicalproblems
dialysis schedule
Look for signs of fluid overload
What do you want hgb to be for dialysis pts?
between 12-13
Heparin should be avoided when when it comes to EsRD patients?
a couple of days prior to surgery
If pt has to have HD after surgery, then for how long should heparin be avoided?
for 24-48 hours
Which NM blocker are we not giving to renal patients?
Pancuronium because it’s renally excreted
Do you need to give less benzos in HD?
Yup! Because they have increased protein binding
