Blood pressure monitoring Flashcards

1
Q

How does taking manual BP work?

A

BP inflated to pressure high enough to stop flow of blood, pressure at which flow returns is systolic pressure, when flow becomes laminar again, sounds stop and this correlates with diastolic pressure.

Q

How large should the bladder cuff be for BP?

A

bladder in cuff should cover 60% of circumference of arm , and the width should be 40% of the length of that limb segment

Q

How does automatic BP work

A

cuff inflated above systolic pressure and blood flow is stopped, once blood flow returns, oscillations are detected. Mean pressure is point at which oscillations are at their maximum and the systolic and diastolic pressures are calculated based on mean and rate of change in oscillatioins.

Q

There is a change of _____ for every ___ that the cuff is above or below the heart. How does it change if it’s above the heart vs. below?

A

0.7 mmHg in pressure for every centimeter above or below. If above, pressure will be lower, if below, pressure will be higher.
