Diabetes insipidus Flashcards
1
Q
= what
A
passage of large volumes of v v dilute urine (3-20L!!) (poly+nocturia) + excessive thirst.
2
Q
divided into
A
central DI (decreased ADH secretion) neprhogenic DI (resistance to ADH in kidney)
3
Q
causes of central diabetes inspidus
A
mets brain tumour infection surgery head trauma
4
Q
causes of neprogenic diabetes insip
A
renal disease
hypokal
hypercalc
5
Q
Ix
A
Na = hypernatraemia
urine osmolality = low
serum osmolality = high
water deprivation test
6
Q
what is the water deprivation test?
A
fluids withheld over 8 hours. if no change in water loss, give desmopressin (synthetic ADH) to distinguish between cranial and nephrogenic. if central there will be a response, if nephrogenic, urine is still dilute
7
Q
rx
A
desmopressin. treat underlying cause
