- Supplies body water
Drug classification
Hypotonic solution (Crystalloid)
Indications (2)
- IV access for medication
2. Diluting solution for IVPB medications
Contraindication
Volume replacement
Adverse effects
Increases free water and may increase edema if large amounts are given
Administration
Infuse at TKO rate using micro-drip tubing (30mcgtts/min)
Pediatric
Not recommended
Onset
Immediate
Duration
Stays in vascular space from 20-40 min
Precaution
Monitor infusion rate frequently
Rationale
Administering excessive fluids to patients with CHF or pulmonary edema may result in fluid overload
Precaution
Do not administer Diazepam through D5W line
Rationale
Diazepam micro-precipitates in presence of D5W
Note

Solution is isotonic while in the bag. When administered, the dextrose is rapidly metabolized and infusion becomes hypotonic and leaves the vasculature
Not indicated for hypovolemia or for hypotensive patients with chest pain.
Monitor for sign of fluid overload by assessing
- LOC
- JVD
- breath sounds
- tidal volume
- respiratory rate
- dyspnea
