Developmental Delay Flashcards
Define developmental delay?
failure to attain appropriate developmental milestones for a childs corrected chronological age
Give examples of a global delay?
affects many areas of development
Downs Syndrome
Give examples of a specific delay?
Motor: Duchennes muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy
Language: language impairment
Sensory deficits: oculocutaneous albinisms, treacher collins
Give examples of a developmental deviation?
Autism
Give examples of a developmental regression?
Retts syndrome
metabolic diseases
What are the 7 red flags for development?
asymmetry of movement not reaching for objects by 6 months unable to sit unsupported by 12 months unable to walk by 18 months no speech by 18 months concerns re vision or hearing loss of skills
What should be checked if a child is unable to walk by 18 months?
CK as they could have muscular dystrophy
What is the diagnostic criteria for a global developmental delay?
significant delay in 2+ of: gross/fine motor skills speech/language social/personal ADL cognition
How are developmental delays investigated?
chromosomes, FRAX, oligoarray CGH
neonatal PKU, thyroid studies, CK
MRI brain, EGC, metabolic studies, genetic consultation
