Developmental: Bandura Flashcards
Background
> agressive behaviour learned through reinforcement according to SLT
previous research shows children will imitate behaviour demonstrated by an adult model
Aim
to show learning can occur through observation of a model, imitation of learned behaviour can occur in the absence of the model
method
Lab
design
independent measures, matched pairs
IV
agression or non-aggressive model
sex of model
sex of child
DV
amount of imitative behaviour and aggression shown by the child in phase 3
sample
72 children 36m 36f from Stanford uni nursery school matched through pre-related 5 point aggression scale
procedure phase 1
> taken to first room and sat at a table with prints and stickers for 10 mins
aggression model turns to abusing bobo doll, non aggressive plays with toys
procedure phase 2
> children taken to anteroom and given mild aggression arousal, toys taken away after 2 mins
procedure phase 3
> taken to third room with aggression and non-aggressive toys, observed through one way screen for 20 mins
findings
> children in aggressive condition showed more imitation of aggression than non-aggression who showed little aggressive behaviour
more likely to imitate behaviour if in same sex condition
boys showed more aggression than girls
conclusions
> children will imitate behaviours displayed by adult models even if model isn’t present
children can learn behaviour through observation and imitation
behaviour modelled by male adults has a greater influence than female adult
children more likely to learn verbal aggression from same sex adults
