Biological: Sperry Flashcards
background
> Broca’s area- evidence of localisation and lateralisation
contralateralisation- right hemisphere received info from left side of body and vice versa
aim
to prove each hemisphere has an independent stream of conscious awareness and has its own chain of memories that aren’t accessible to the other
experimental method
quasi
IV
split brain or not
DV
pps performance on visual and tactile tests
sample
11 pps with corpus callosum severed due to severe epilepsy
female with surgery from 4 years ago and a male with surgery 5.5 years ago
equipment used
tachistoscope
procedure on visual test
> pps stare at a fixation point on centre of an upright screen
stimuli projected for 0.1s to one visual field
procedure on tactile test
> pps put hands through gap underneath the screens out of sight
objects placed on one or both hands
visual test results
> info shown to one visual field only recognised by same visual field
info shown to RVF can be described in speech and writing with right hand
info shown to LVF pps say “don’t know” but could point to matching pic using left hand
if shown different stimuli to each visual field pps will say what was shown in RVF and draw stimuli from LVF with left hand
results from tactile test
> objects placed in right hand can be described in speech and writing
objects placed in left hand lead to wild guesses from pp
objects placed in one hand are recognised by same hand
if an object is placed in both hands, each hand will separately search for own item
conclusions
> split brain patients lack cross-integration
split brain patients have 2 independent streams of consciousness
