What is the aim of lees study
To investigate if cultural differences exist in the perception of lying and truth telling and whether it changes with age

120 children from hangzou equal numbers of male and female
7,9,11 yrs-40 in each condition
What was the Canadian sample from lees study
108 children from New Brunswick
58 male /50 female
36 7 years olds
40 9 year olds
32 11 year olds
What was the procedure in lees study
Children were tested individually in controlled conditions
4 possible stories either social -someone being hurt or helped or physical -someone damaging or repairing
After reading the 1st half of the paragraph behaviour was rated on a 7 point scale
Behaviour was rated again using the same scale after reading the rest
Both read in different orders to counterbalance and reduce order effects
What were the findings from lees study
Similarities
No gender differences
Both cultures saw good deeds as good and vice versa
Both approved of truth telling in antisocial situation which increased with age
Differences
In prosocial situations truth telling was rated similar at all ages
Chinese rated it less favourably with age

Culture and age do have an impact on children’s moral development
