Development Lungs Flashcards
What is considered the upper respiratory system?
Nose to the larynx
What is considered the lower respiratory system?
Larynx to the lungs
Where is the respiratory system derived from?
The second part of the foregut
Where is the connective tissue, cartilage and muscle developed from in the lungs?
Splanchnic mesoderm and neural crest
What is necessary to separate the esophagus from the trachea?
The tracheoesophageal ridge
At what week do the lungs begin to form?
4th week
What is a tracheoesophageal fistula?
An abnormal passage between the trachea and esophagus
Why is it necessary for lungs to touch the mesenchyme while developing?
The mesenchyme releases the needed growth factors for the lungs to continue to develop
What are the stages o flung development?
Embryonic Pseudo glandular Canalicular Saccular Alveolar
What are the 3 factors for normal lung development?
Adequate space
Surfactant synthesis
Adequate amniotic fluid
Which direction do the lungs grow?
Laterally and caudally
What is oligohydramnios?
Too little amniotic fluid
What is characteristic of the embryonic stage?
Lung bud formation (evagination of foregut)
What is characteristic of the pseudo glandular stage?
All elements present by end except those involved in gas exchange
What is characteristic of the canalicular stage?
Simple cuboidal epithelial cells begin to differentiate into respiratory cells
