Development Flashcards
Is there one course of development or many courses? (Nature vs Nurture)
Debatable
What is the difference between those who argue there is one/many courses of development?
-Nature Matters (ex. newborn babies display range of innate skills)
-Nurture Matters (ex. environment plays a major role)
Is development continuous or discontinuous?
debatable
What is the difference between continuous development and discontinuous development?
-Behaviorists think development is continuous and mostly influenced by the environment.
-Cognitive Psychologists think it happens by stages and is influenced by genes.
What are the four stages of Piaget’s theory?
1.Sensorimotor
2.Preoperational
3.Concrete Operational
4.Formal Operational
Do we change over time?
Yes and No as both early experiences and life experiences greatly affect development
What is the difference between stability and plasticity?
Stability - development is based on inborn individual differences and set by early experiences
Plasticity - development is lifelong and open to change based on experiences throughout life
Which one is more important: nature or nurture?
Nurture may be slightly more important based on Prof opinion
What is the Sensorimotor step?
children gain knowledge through senses and motor movements
What is the Preoperational step?
children begin to think symbolically
What is the Concrete Operational step?
children begin to understand logical thinking
What is the Formal Operational step?
children begin to think abstractly and can form hypothesis
