Developing New Drugs Flashcards
Immunity- how long at first does it take a long time to cure a illness/infection
It takes a long time because it takes a little while for your white blood cells to produce the antibodies to cure the illness/infection. You feel ill because your body is trying to figure out a way of curing.
What happens if you get the same infection
White blood cells have something called memory cells therefore it can remember how to produce the antibodies. Therefore it can cure you in a matter of hours
Herd immunity
Herd immunity is the resistance to the spread of a communicable disease
What happens if people stop taking up vaccines
The herd immunity is lost and the disease can appear again
If people keep taking the vaccines then…
The herd immunity remains and the disease is no longer communicable
What does vaccination involve
It involves injecting small of dead or weakened pathogens into the body
What does vaccination stimulate
White blood cells to produce antibodies
Digitalis- what is it used for
Strengthening the heart beat
Where does digitalis come from
Foxglove
Aspirin- what is it used for
Treating a wide range of health problems
Where does aspirin come from
Bark of willow trees
What is penicillin used for
To kill and cure infections diseases
Who discovered penecillin
Sir Alexander Fleming
How did he discover penecillin
He found that penicillin killed the mould of an object. When he looked at this he discovered penicillin
Toxicity
Whether the drug has any poisonous side effects
