Blood And Circulatory System Flashcards
What does the blood plasma do
The plasma transports all your blood cells and some other substances around your body
What is the blood plasma
The plasma is a yellow liquid
What do red blood cells do
Red blood cells pick up oxygen from the air in your lungs and carry it to the cells where it is needed
What do red blood cells look like
Red blood cells are red biconcave discs. Being concave on both sides gives them n increased surface area to volume ratio.
What do white blood cells do
White blood cells form a part of the body’s defence systems against harmful microorganisms.
Are white blood cells bigger than red blood cells
Yes
What are platelets
Platelets are small fragments of cells, they have no nucleus
What do platelets do
They have a very important purpose of helping the blood to clot at the side of a wound
Characteristics of artery
Thick walls containing muscle and elastic fibres, has a small lummen
Function of artery
Your arteries carry away blood away from your heart to the organs of your body
Veins characteristics
Relatively thick walls, large lummen, often have valves
Function of veins
Veins carry blood away from your organs to your heart. This blood is usually low in oxygen an therefore a deep purple-red colour
Characteristics of capillary
LummenA single thick wall, tiny vessel with narrow lummen
Function of capillary
Capillaries form a huge network of tiny vessels linking arteries and the veins. They are very narrow and have thin walls so it enables oxygen and glucose to diffuse easily out of your blood and into your cells
Double circulation system
Is in humans and other mammals
One transport system carries blood from your heart to your lungs and back again. This allows oxygen and carbon dioxide to be exchanged with the air in the lungs
The other transport system carries blood from your heart to all other organs of your body and back again
