LINE
Line can organise parts of a layout, separating them or bringing them together, or create a sense of movement. Different styles, styles and colours of line can create different effects and create interest. Can guide the views attention. Can organise columns.
SHAPE
Squares and rectangles: they surround us in life and tend to be trusted. They are interesting when rotated and overlapped.
Circles and ellipses: they are used to show a number of different feelings. They can suggest a safe region or movement. They are reliable shapes and can be used in car manufacturing.
Triangles: They can suggest movement and communicate conflict due to the sharp corners. They can also show strength and create impact.
TEXTURE
The texture affects the physical feel of the paper used and makes the publication more intriguing. Can create contrast with other textures.
SIZE
Size can highlight the more important elements in a page as if it’s larger you may notice it sooner.
COLOUR
Colours can convey emotion and present information or appeal to a particular market.
MASS/WEIGHT
This refers to the amount of space that an object occupies. The mass can be increased by giving it dark colours or increasing its size. Mass and size is important when choosing text styles. Mass and weight are commonly used in relation to other items on the page to create rhythm.
