Design reports
An industrial design team’s project record for future reference
Consists of 3 main parts:
Executive summary
Introduction
Conclusion
Technical reports
Used to:
Record practical test results
Target market research
Reviewing products relevant to design development
Can include:
Technical terms - such as names of materials, use of tables, graphs and charts
Orthographic projection
Standardised method for drawing the front, plan and side elevation of an object
First angle views - on the opposite side from the viewpoint
Third angle views - on the same side as the viewpoint
Sectional drawings
A method used to show internal features of an object
The object is usually ‘cut’ in half along a ‘cutting plane’
Isometric
A drawing technique for 3D ideas using 30 degree lines
Crating
Use of a 3D box to help construct drawings
Perspective drawings
3D design and presentation drawings using one or two vanishing points
Design report - executive summary
concise overview of the project, the resulting design and its effectiveness
Design report - introduction
design problem context
details of client and possible customers
alternative ideas and the selection process used to choose the final design
Design report - conclusion
description of the selected design
details of how the problems were dealt with
evaluation of the design against the original specification criteria
analysis of and modification suggestions for designs not meeting criteria and testing methods used
