Descending Motor Tracts Flashcards
Where do pyramidal tracts originate?
Cerebral Cortex
What is the function of the pyramidal tracts?
Voluntary Control of muscles of the body and face
What does the corticospinal tract control?
Musculature of the body
What is the pathway of the lateral CST?
Cerebral Cortex –> Internal Capsule –> Brainstem –> Decussates at pyramids –> descends into spinal cord –> ventral horn of LMN
What is the pathway of the anterior CST?
Cerebral Cortex–> Internal Capsule –> Brainstem –> Descends IPSILATTERALLY INTO Spinal Cord –> Decussates within spinal cord–> ventral horn
What is the pathway of the corticobulbar tracts?
Primary motor cortex –> Internal capsule –> Brainstem –> Motor Nuclei of Cranial Nerves
Where do extra-pyramidal tracts originate?
Brainstems
What is the function of the extra-pyramidal tract?
Carry motor fibres to spinal cord
What do extrapyramidal tracts control?
They control involuntary and automatic control of all musculature (muscle tone, balance and locomotion)
describe the pathway of the vestibulospinal tract?
Arise from vestibular nuclei –> spinal cord and remain ipsilateral
What does the vestibulospinal tract control?
balance and posture via innervating anti-gravity muscles
Where does the rubrospinal tract originate?
Red Nucleus
Where does the rubrospinal tract decussate?
Midbrain and descends into spinal cord
Where does the tectospinal tract originate?
Superior Colliculus of Midbrain
Where does the tectospinal tract decussate?
midbrain
